AI product photography: when it works and when you need a real shoot
What AI product photography is, where it beats a studio shoot, where it falls short, and how small brands in India can use both well.
AI product photography has gone from a novelty to something small brands use every week. You can take one photo of a ring, a candle or a pair of shoes and place it on marble, in a garden or under festive lights in minutes. It is a genuinely useful tool, and it is easy to misuse. Here is how we decide when to use it and when to book a real shoot.
What AI product photography actually is
An AI product shoot starts with a clean photo of your real product. AI tools then generate the scene around it: the surface, the background, the props and the light. Done well, the product stays exactly as it is and only the setting changes.
That matters. If the AI changes the product itself, such as the shape of a stone, the colour of a fabric or the number of buttons, the image is no longer an honest picture of what the customer will receive.
Where AI shoots work well
Social posts and banners
Instagram posts, festive banners and website hero images are about mood. A ring on navy velvet with soft light tells a story faster than a plain white background, and AI lets you try several moods from one product photo.
Seasonal campaigns
Building a Diwali set, a wedding-season scene and a monsoon theme in a studio takes time and money. AI makes it practical to refresh your visuals every season.
Testing ideas before a big shoot
AI scenes are a quick way to agree on a look before the real shoot, so everyone knows what the day is aiming for.
Where you still need a real shoot
Product pages and catalogues
When a customer is deciding whether to buy, they need the real item: true colour, real size and honest detail. Product pages should use real photos of each piece, ideally from a few angles.
Jewellery, fabric and food up close
Sparkle in a stone, the weave of a fabric and the texture of fresh food come from real light on the real thing. These are exactly the details customers zoom in on, and exactly where AI can quietly get things wrong.
People and places
Your team, your shop and your customers should always be real. Trust is built on seeing the actual people and places behind a business.
How to use both well
- Start with a sharp, well-lit photo of the real product. AI cannot fix a blurry original.
- Use AI scenes for mood: posts, banners and campaigns.
- Use real photos for decisions: product pages, catalogues and listings.
- Never let the AI change the product itself, and label AI images where it matters to the customer.
An example: an emerald ring
For Arihant Jewellers we created an AI shoot of an emerald and diamond ring on a navy velvet box. It works beautifully for social posts and banners. For product listings, real photos of each piece are the right choice, and that is what we recommend to every jeweller.
